DIY rubber tiles – top summer inspiration

Rubber outdoor tiles

Weather-resistant rubber tiles by WARCO make an extremely durable flooring that is just perfect for summer-chill out. After the hot season, it may be easily uninstalled and used in a different place

The use of outdoor rubber tiles has been one of the hottest decorating and renovation trends in the summer 2015! It is not hard to see why:

  • Rubber flooring by WARCO is UV rays-proof and may be installed in all sun-exposed areas without worries that the colour will fade. Made of high-quality EPDM rubber granulate, it retains its full, saturated colour for the whole period of use.
  • This material also ensures thermal isolation, protecting us from heat and cold. As a result, we may safely walk barefoot on the tiles with no worries of getting our feet burnt. Apart from the thermal isolation, rubber granulate also offers acoustic protection, allowing our kids to play ball games safely as the noise assisting all games is significantly reduced. How to build a beautiful garden path or a walkway?

A garden pathway composed of brick-red rubber interlocking pavers

Elastic interlocking pavers on a garden path

While planning paths in your garden or around the house, consider the material which is safe and ecological – choose rubber interlocking pavers to make an even and fall-attenuating surface. Do not be led down the garden path, though – rubber pavers are very sturdy so you can carry loads on them, e.g. in a wheelbarrow!

Rubber interlocking pavers look like typical concrete paving blocks, only they are more colourful. However, when you touch or walk on them, the difference is evident. Standing on the rubber pavers is pleasant due to the elastic, cushioning feel. Your feet are insulated from the ground by the 43 mm thick pavers – the surface is neither too hot nor too cold. Rubber tiles and pavers for driveways, carports and parking spaces

Elastic flooring for parking places and driveways

A parking space elastic paving

WARCO offers products specially designed for car traffic, sturdier than standard terrace tiles, so you can have a modern and ecological driveway which makes also a perfect play area.

A great solution for any irregular-shaped or narrow places around the house are V043 interlocking rubber pavers or TZ40 or NF40 terrace tiles. These products are robust enough to have a car on them but also resilient enough to attenuate the impact of a child’s fall or make a comfortable leisure area. The area will have no puddles because all our products from rubber granulate are water-permeable. So, your driveway, carport or backyard will be dry and your car much cleaner. And, you are winning an extra space for a garden party or a play area!

Installing WARCO elastic flooring in a garage is not recommended, though. The tiles and pavers are water-permeable so there would be a muddy residue under the tiles which would have to be cleaned. This problem vanishes when it comes to outdoors!

Interlocking pavers can be easily installed on garden paths, which tend to be muddy. The pavers will make a non-slippery, safe and beautiful path on which you can carry garden tools, e.g. wheelbarrows. Use them on any place where there is a slipping hazard – near water containers, or where you should have easy access regardless of the season and weather.

On larger areas where children usually play and cars go only now and then, use our robust TZ40 or NF40 terrace tile (in the photo above). This tile is slightly softer than interlocking pavers and has better fall protection quality. Its underside is profiled, so water drainage is more efficient. The tile can be also used vertically on a garage or house wall as a bumper.

With both products you can use special wedge-shaped elastic edging (as in the photo) which is fastened to bound subfloors (by gluing). The edging eliminates the stumbling hazard and acts as a ramp for a parking car. For garden paths (on unbound subfloor) elastic kerb edging or palisades make the best solution.

WARCO interlocking pavers, walkway tiles and edging accessories are available in a wide selection of colours (i.e. anthracite black, brick-red, grass-green and cement-grey).

EPDM vs. tyre rubber granulate

What is the difference between two most common rubber types, used in the production of rubber floor tiles? Tyre rubber granulate (obtained from the recycling of car tyres), which provides good fall protection, is cheaper and easier to get, and most of rubber floor tiles on the market are manufactured from tyre rubber. EPDM rubber, on the other hand, is better-quality rubber which is more durable, and therefore used in demanding areas, where high quality is of a special importance (terraces, restaurants, stables).
